At the same time, the risk of severe thunderstorms is increasing, some of which could bring hail, squalls and heavy rain.
Midsummer heat with risk of thunderstorms
Several days with temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius are forecast in the east of the country this week. In addition, so-called tropical nights could occur, where the temperature does not fall below 20 degrees Celsius at night. From Vorarlberg to Upper Styria, on the other hand, it will remain somewhat cooler, but there is a higher risk of thunderstorms.
Wednesday brings an increased risk of thunderstorms
After sunny midsummer weather with temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius, the risk of thunderstorms will increase across the country on Wednesday. Powerful thunderstorm cells with hail, squalls, and heavy rain could develop in the hot and humid air.
Heat in the east and cooling in the west
In the east of Austria, the thermometer will once again read over 30 degrees Celsius, while cooler air will flow in with the thunderstorms in the west.
Tropical Nights in Vienna
In the second half of the week, it will often be sunny and over 30 degrees Celsius from Vienna to Graz. At night, temperatures will not fall below 20 degrees Celsius in some places, especially in urban areas. Meteorologists refer to this as so-called tropical nights.
Alpine valleys: slightly cooler temperatures, but increased risk of thunderstorms
It is generally a little cooler in the Alpine valleys, but the 30-degree mark will still be reached there from time to time. The risk of showers and thunderstorms will remain high in the afternoon. Friday in particular may see heavy showers.
Weekend with cooler air
Significantly cooler air will briefly flow in at the weekend. It is still unclear whether this will reach the far east of the country. After that, however, it will quickly become sunnier and hotter again, with the risk of thunderstorms increasing again next week, especially in the west.
